Example of a Database Search
We have decided to search for distributors of air compressed equipment in a few states in the USA. The demand profile is that the companies must presently be selling air compressor equipment, or systems, or hydraulic systems. We have now hooked up to one of Dialog's Databases, a D&B database for USA (516). As you can see, the database informs us that we can find more information in database 519. The latter one contains more in-depth information including credit checks for the various companies. We can either search in words (cleartext), or like below, in SIC codes, (Standard Industrial Codes), which makes our search faster.
SO LET US START THE SEARCH.
(YOU CAN SEARCH VIA MENUS WHICH ARE MORE USER-FRIENDLY HOWEVER THE METHOD BELOW IS MUCH QUICKER WHEN YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE SEARCHING PROCEDURE. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT WE HAVE CLOSED THE MENUS)
?begin 516 (WE SAY WE WANT DATABASE 516)
AS YOU CAN SEE BELOW, WE HAVE DESIGNED THE SEARCH SO THAT THE COMPANY HAS TO MATCH AT LEAST ONE OF OUR CRITERIA. THIS IS WHY WE SAID "OR". JUST LIKE IN MATHEMATICS WE HAVE PUT IN PARENTHESES TO AVOID WRITING PC (PRIMARY CODE) IN FRONT OF EACH CODE. NOTE THAT THE PRODUCT CODES IN THIS CASE ARE EXCLUSIVELY APPLIED TO DISTRIBUTORS.
Set Items Description
?select pc=(50840907 or 50840903 or 50849905)
658 PC=50840907 (PNEUMATIC TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT)
S2 2534 PC=(50840907 OR 50840903 OR 50849905)
IN THIS CASE WE FOUND 2534 COMPANIES WHICH MATCHED OUR DEMAND PROFILE, IN OTHER WORDS, WAY TOO MANY. SO, WE WILL ASK THE DATABASE TO USE THE COMPANIES WE FOUND, AND SEARCH FOR COMPANIES FROM A FEW SELECTED STATES. BY DOING THIS, WE CAN LIMIT OURSELVES GEOGRAPHICALLY.
?select s2 and st=(ca or ms or ky or mo or tx or va or ks or mn or va or co or wa) (short form for respective states, e.g. California or Mississippi...)
WE ARE LEFT WITH 839, WHICH IS STILL TOO MANY FOR US.
?select s3 and (em>=15 and em<=75)
NOW THE NUMBER IS DOWN TO 120. WE WILL ASK THE COMPUTER TO SORT THE FILES BY STATE, SO THAT WHEN WE "DUMP" THE INFORMATION, WE WILL HAVE IT ORGANIZED BY STATE.
S5 120 Sort S4/ALL/ST
WE ASK THE COMPUTER TO "WRITE OUT" THESE FILES TO OUR HARD DRIVE FORMAT 3 WHICH IS A RELATIVELY CHEAP FORMAT. WE DO THIS SO THAT, FOR A SMALL COST, WE CAN SORT OUT THE FILES WE DON'T WANT BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER.
?type s5/3/all (WRITE OUT SEARCH 5 IN FORMAT 3, WRITE OUT ALL I.E. 120)
In other words, we got 120 company profiles of this type, of which the above was the first. The complete search took only three minutes, including down-loading the results. As you can see, we received enough information to be able to sort out which companies might prove interesting. For this company, we got the company name, address and telephone number, as well as a short description of their activities and the sic numbers they are registered under. The Duns number which we were given can be used e.g. a credit check. We can even see that the company is a subsidiary of Compressed Air International and are given their Duns number as well. We also got the name of the chairman of the board and the number of executives. As well, we received a ball park figure of the size of the company. Furthermore, we received 120 similar profiles on other companies that matched our demand profile. After choosing the companies that we were interested in, we searched for more detailed information on the respective company, which gave us a comprehensive profile on the company , the stockholders, annual sales during the last three years, and the company's profitability in comparison to other companies in the same trade. If they have more offices, we are told where they are situated. The number of clients and types of clients, size of the premises etc. is also given. Also given is credit information, all direct from the database. Moreover, these databases often supply information on geographical coverage and some background on the key employees.
This is only one example of what you can do on a database. All you need to succeed, and select the right market, is market information. Holmvall International Trading Inc. will gladly perform similar searches for you, for the country you want and the specifications you choose.
What you can get:
If, in the above example, you want more information on e.g. trade organizations within the compressed air industry, we can find it for you. We can even produce a list of manufacturers as well as import and export statistics. If you wish to have more information about your main competitor, you can get full company information, information on their patents, and patents they have sought, as well as if any recent articles have been written about their company or the company management.
SOME EXAMPLES OF SEARCHES
Let us give you a feeling for the variety of other searches you can perform. Here are examples of what types of information you can obtain, and the time it takes to find it.
Find distributors in Germany who sell software for computers with emphasis within the transport and logistics fields. Result: 67 companies. Search time: approx. 4 minutes.
Search for companies in Great Britain who are printers with a specialization in built-in magnetic strips. Result: 50+ companies. Search time: approx. 7 minutes.
How many quarries and underground mines are there in the world, list the findings per country in order of priority. Result: 1,000+ Search time: 10 minutes.
Find a product with the name Power Drain Plug. Article found in the Santa Barbara Morning News, August 1992. Search time 10 minutes.

How does the product development for the " elderly market" in USA and Japan look? Result: 100+ articles and sources. Search time to find the sources and articles, approx. 10 minutes. Another 15 minutes was spent identifying the interesting studies and articles.
A Swedish company requested help to search for information using an information consultant. This consultant wanted to perform an analysis of the competition. The company however, thought they knew everything possible about the competition. In spite of this, the consultant searched for the competition, and it turned out that one of them was on their way into the Swedish market. This search resulted in a crisis meeting in order to decide how to respond to, or alternatively, stop the competition. Had the consultant not performed the search, the company would have been up the creek without a paddle.
As we mentioned earlier, there is a large amount of suppliers of databases. There are databases which give you continuous information on worldbank projects or all trades proposed for e.g. Europe or Africa. Some more examples of what you can do: you can search for patents in the music synthesizer industry, and who owns them. You can also find information on the population in the Los Angeles area, age statistics, marital status, income information etc. You may also wish to know what the Japanese consumer price index (CPI) has been in the last 20 years. For some reason, you may also wish to know who stared in the film "Gone with the Wind" !
The idea is not to teach you how to use databases, but to understand their possibilities. In the beginning, you should at least accept help from someone who is familiar with databases. Otherwise, searching can be very expensive, and the risk is that won't find the information you want. Since you link up to the database via a telephone line, it doesn't matter where in the world the system is accessed from.
We will gladly help you with your searches, irrespective of whether you wish to search the Northamerican market, or a market in another part of the world. Contact us, and inform us of what you need. We can tell you what to expect and to what cost.
